Lady Stewart has a tremendous interest in what happens in the area and on a recent site visit to brief her about the importance of our rescue service in the community, she came “on board” willing to add her ideas and contacts to help advance public awareness in all aspects of safety at sea. She commented that Sumner Lifeboat has a proud past which needs a firm financial base to carry on the task of so many volunteers both past and present who have given their full commitment to the part Sumner Lifeboat plays in saving lives.

The replacement Lifeboat project is gathering momentum with design, main component quotations, and a fundraising plan almost nailed down. Key prospective local suppliers have been invited to quote on the main components arriving at a robust budget of $674,500 + gst. This will return a new fast-response lifeboat to the main boatshed at Sumner.
A common theme of the project is ‘local’. Local infrastructure (the refurbished Lifeboat Station), local expertise (designer & suppliers to build to international standards), local volunteers (crew bringing high levels of competence and commitment), and the support of the local community, combined to result in a “purpose built” lifeboat based at Sumner to serve the communities of Christchurch and Canterbury for 30 years or more.
